We Have a New Bowls Secretary.

9 Jul 2023 by John Davis

Hello Bowlers,

Well almost!
As the only nominee as at 11am yesterday, I will be confirmed at the bowls AGM on Saturday as your Bowls Secretary for the next 12 months.

Firstly, thanks to John Rushton, for stepping in earlier this year to fulfil the role at short notice and in difficult circumstances.

Later this week I will provide an update on the future after consultation with John and assessment of our current bowls calendar.

In short, the next 12 months are about the future. As Maurie said in his speech at our afternoon celebrating Marj’s 85th birthday on Thursday, and sending Steve Edmead off after his whirlwind 18 months membership, the essence of our club is a friendly and welcoming place, where we can have a game of bowls, a laugh and a beer afterwards.

There are a number of challenges, not the least of which is finding 3 selectors at the AGM. I want to work as a team with the selectors across all areas of bowls. We had such a great season, welcoming 4 Newport bowlers every week as part of our combined 7’s side, and having a very good season in the 4’s and 6’s as well, both threatening the leaders until the very end. Then there was the Lloyd Watson shield against St Ives 3 weeks ago, where positive feedback from our visitors was the overwhelming sentiment. That together with Thursday’s event, is what we are about.

So……please consider if you wish to join the team as a selector – no experience necessary. The role will include weekly cards roster, trialing all bowlers in different positions and combinations, and of course selecting pennants teams. Bring an open mind and good ideas. We will be setting a goal of winning a Zone flag in the next 3 years.

Cheers,
John Davis
