Club Fours Report

20 Feb 2022 by John Davis

Hello Bowlers,

The first two round 1 matches were completed yesterday and what a way to start our first Club Championship for 2022.

First out of the blocks was Diana Newton, Adam Warr, Keith Lorenz and Mick Hall V Sue Bryan, Maurie Altman, Richard Bryan and me.

Our side got off to a flyer, leading at 12 ends 19/4, after some fabulous bowling by all team members. Then . Mick and Co started a run of 5 straight ends to get back into the match at 20/12. each team managed a win each to go into the 20th end at 21/14. From there we were fortunate enough to run out winners 24/12, which I can assure those who were not competing was much closer than the score appears after a very nervous final 4end period.

On rink 3, Marj Berry, Jenny Solomon, John Donlan and San Marsden were pitted against Bret Harris, Dave Lemmon, Pops and Maurie Overy. For the first half of the match Sam and Co maintained a consistent lead without dominating, yet they looked more comfortable. Then at end 14, the match tightened and Maurie and co got back to within 1 shot to exert extreme pressure over their opposition. After an umpire measure to split two bowls less than 2 mm apart Sam and Co started end 21 up 18/16. Early bowls favoured Sam until Pops bumped one of his bowls into shot. Then Maurie draws number 2. With a tie looming Sam delivers his final bowl to again reduce Maurie to just 1 shot. Maurie’s final bowl glides within millimetres of the target to no avail. A brilliant, late finishing match had the gathered crowding cheering and yelling with Sam and Co winners 18/17.

What a day.

Fabulous bowling on a good green.

Cheers,
John Davis
